AuroraCoin was introduced to the public on February 2, 2014. AuroraCoin originated in Iceland and, according to official sources, was created by Baldur Friggjar Odinsson, but nobody actually knows who really created it. This ambitious digital currency aspired to overtake Bitcoin and the Icelandic króna as the leading cryptocurrency and official currency in Iceland. The creators announced that they intended to give away 50% of all AuroraCoins to the population of Iceland, which is approximately 330 thousand people. In this case, the average Icelander would get 32 AuroraCoins.
Right after its launch, AuroraCoin started to gain popularity and value. A couple of months later its price reached an all-time high was equal to approximately 0.1 BTC. However, the price then came down to 0.004 BTC. On April 22, 2015, the remaining pre-mined coins were burned and Auroracoin began to stabilize.
Since 2015, AuroraCoin has been managed by an entirely new team. AuroraCoin’s development was continued with the goal of helping Icelanders switch to using cryptocurrencies.
