Blackcoin is a Scrypt-based cryptocurrency which initially was running on the PoW (Proof of Work) protocol. it was released on February 24, 2014, and had a zero pre-mine, meaning that everyone had a fair chance of mining or buying them. One week later, after the 10,000th block had been found, the protocol was changed to PoS (Proof of Stake).
Blackcoin’s transaction speed is just 10 seconds which is very attractive to merchants. Proof-of-stake systems consume significantly less power than proof-of-work systems and process transactions more quickly.
BlackCoin claims to have solved some of the security issues, that plague proof-of-stake systems, by requiring users to be online in order to participate in bidding, thus making it a lot harder to amass 51 percent of the maximum bidding power and totally control verification.
BlackCoin developers are always available on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and IRC, where they answer questions and announce updates. The developers also hold a BlackCoin Lottery and other community events. BlackCoin's application BlackHalo is a decentralized currency exchanger that facilitates convenient currency conversion.
There are currently approximately 75 million blackcoins in circulation. The only way to generate new blackcoins is through staking.
